Shiatsu is a traditional style of acupressure massage that is used to restore and maintain body balance to the body's vital energy (qi). When an imbalance in the body's qi occurs, stagnation and deficiency arise eventually leading to dis-ease.

By applying varying degrees of pressure of specific points along the qi pathways (meridians) with the thumbs, fingertips, and/or palm of the hands, the shiatsu practitioner gently moves the qi in the meridians resulting in a rebalancing of the body's vital energy.

Shiatsu is seen as a partnership and exchange of qi bewteen the giver (the shiatsu practitioner) and the receiver (the patient). Shiatsu is given on the floor on a mat or futon with the receiver fully clothed. Prior to beginning a shiatsu session, the giver asks questions and palpates the receiver's pulse and abdomen. This information helps the shiatsu practitioner formulate an individual session based upon the receiver's own unique energetic strengths and weaknesses.

A typical shiatsu session lasts approximately one hour, with the initial visit being slightly longer due to the extensive health history in-take by the practitioner. Loose, comfortable clothing and cotton socks are the best attire for the session.

Receivers of shiatsu generally experience a sense of deep relaxation and overall well-being, as well as a gradual lessening of any symptoms caused by qi imbalance. Over time, the benefits become more profound and the receiver develops a deeper understanding of their own body's qi dynamic, leading to a happier and healthier life.
